Having return the rented car, we will spend the remaining 3 nights in the city of Taipei.
Here are some of the sights that's a must in Taipei.
In order to get to one place to another, we would have to get ourselves familiarise with public transport system. Here's the Taipei Metro system map.
I also need to search for accommodation for us to put up when we are in Taipei. Ideally, it should be within walking distance to their subway system and have easy access for us to get to the airport eventually.
Taipei 101 (to be able to take a photo of a complete view of the tower, need to make sure you are at least a few streets away)
Dazzling Cafe (more for desserts)
XiMenDing
ShiLin Night Market
Getting there : Via the Taipei Metro Danshui line to Jiantan Station
Danshui
Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall
Modern Toilet Restaurant 便所主题餐厅

Taiwan Road Trip Day 11 Keelung
Taipei - Yehliu - Keelung - NanYa - Bitou - Keelung
Pick up car rental and proceed to Yehliu Geological Park. (Est. 1hr drive from Taipei city)
This will be the beginning of n days of road trip away from Taipei.
I prefer to drive rather than getting a local driver cum guide as I everyone will be more at ease with not having a stranger among us.
From Yehliu, the plan is to drive east towards Keelung and eventually to Bitou.
(Est. 1.5hrs if using Hwy 2 coastal road)
This journey is meant to be a relaxing drive with multiple stopovers for sights such as NanYa Rock Formations, Yin Yang Sea and for us to soak in the sceneries as we travel along the coastal roads to Bitou Cape. It is also a warm up journey to get us comfortable with the unique experience and roads, signs and traffics in and around Taiwan.
I've taking the liberty of breaking down the journey from Yehliu Geopark to Bitou into two main legs. The first is getting to Keelung.
Don't know what to expect in this leg as the sights are mainly on the latter leg of the journey, ie., between Keelung and Bitou.
Head west from Bitou back to Keelung. Plan is to stay the night at Harbour View Hotel/Keelung Evergreen Laurel Hotel.
As for the night activity, head down to Miaokou Market.

Taiwan Road Trip Day 10 Yilan - ShiFen - PingXi
Depart from hotel in Keelung to ShiFen and PingXi. Why both ShiFen and PingXi? Aren't both of this village very very similar? ShiFen has the waterfall, but PingXi is more famous for releasing the lanterns.
Reminder: Long and winding roads expected as we head towards ShiFen. Get your Nausea-pill ready for the journey.
Anyway, along the way, be on look out for Golden Waterfalls before arriving at Jinguashi.
Then at Jinguashi, we should visit Japanese-styled homes, the Gold Museum and then Beishan Fifth Tunnel.
Thereatfer, head on to the old streets of JiuFen.
From the Google map below, it seems that in terms of required travelling time, taking the route-102 or route-106 is about the same (1hr 20mins). But route-106 seems closer to the sights along ShiFen. There are quite a number of sites to see.
Hence, it's best to spend a night either in ShiFen or Pingxi. This place is known to be very crowded with limited spaces. Hence, finding a minsu with a car park lot nearby is ideal.
Taiwan Road Trip Day 7 & 8 & 9 Hualien - Yilan
The plan for the day is to depart early from CingJing and drive to Hualien via Taroko National Park.
Along the way, we will get to see Hehuanshan and the famous sights around Taroko Gorge before arriving at Hualien. Hehuashan is more than 3000m about sea level.
If we are early, we may be able to beat the crowd and do some sight-seeing.
Taroko National Park
• Taroko Gorge, Eternal Spring Shrine, Swallow Grotto, Tunnel of Nine Turns, Xiangde Temple, Tiensiang Lodge
The plan is to spend 2 nights (Minsu www.hualienbay.com or www.36lighthouse.com) in Hualien so that we can have more time to enjoy the views and maybe even taking some of the hiking trails.
Food around Hualien is predominantly centred around 3 major streets of Zhongshan, Zhonghua and Zhongzheng Roads.
GongZhengBaoZi 公正包子 - for their steamed dumpling and thick-skinned XiaoLongBao
JiangJiaGuanCaiBan 蒋家棺財板 - for their stuffed coffin toast bread
YeXiangBianShiDian 液香扁食店 - for their wantons
Number One Kebab 第一家烤肉串 - for their BBQ skewers
Hualien Stone Sculptural Park
Marble Factory
XiQingTan Beach
The most picturesque part of the drive on Highway 9 from Yilan to Hualien. We will be passing through numerous tunnels built into hills and mountains. Some tunnels only allow one way traffic at any single time, hence, one have to wait for ones turn to pass through.
If we were to head to Yilan town itself from Hualien, the drive would take 3hours.
In Yilan, should try the Wengyaoji (Urn roasted chicken).
Then should go visit Lanyang Museum and take a coffee break at Mr Brown Castle Cafe before heading for a walk along the Wai'ao Beach.
The black sand Wai'ao Beach.
Take more pictures in Jimi Square or enjoy the scents and aroma of plants in Artemis Garden.
Suggest that we put up a night here in Yilan.

Taiwan Road Trip Day 5 & 6 Nantou (Sun Moon Lake-CingJing)
For the next two days at Sun Moon Lake, should take the opportunity to explore the following tourist spots.
Sun Moon Lake
Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water in Taiwan as well as a tourist attraction. Situated in Yuchi, Nantou, the area around the Sun Moon Lake is home to the Thao tribe, one of aboriginal tribes in Taiwan. Sun Moon Lake surrounds a tiny island called Lalu Island. The east side of the lake resembles a sun while the west side resembles a moon, hence the name.
Sun Moon Lake is located 748 m (2,454 ft) above sea level. It is 27 m (89 ft) deep and has a surface area of approximately 7.93 km2 (3.06 sq mi). The area surrounding the lake has many trails for hiking.
Cycling around Sun Moon Lake
Said to be one of “10 Breathtaking Cycling Routes” around the world by CNN News in 2012, I was able to experience the Yuetan Bike Path around Sun Moon Lake from Shuishe, Taiwan. You can choose to do the leisurely 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) in-and-out section, or cycle around the entire 29 kilometers (18 miles).
Formosan Aboriginal Cultural Village
Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is close to Sun Moon Lake and covers an area of 62 hectares. This diverse theme park is suitable for people of all ages, and is divided into 3 main theme areas: European Garden, Joy to the World, and Aboriginal Tribal Areas. The overall layout in the park is perfect. Besides providing an exquisite experience to learn about the aboriginal culture, the park also has the latest thrill rides for visitors of all ages to experience.
Wen Wu Temple
The temple to enshrine and worship Confucius, Guan Gong and Yue Faye.
Originally, there were two temples on the Sun Moon Lake coast. However, due to the Japanese government plan to generate electricity using the lake, they built a dam and made the water level raised up. The two temples were then torn down and rebuilt at the present location of Wen Wu Temple in 1938.
After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the government spent money to develop the tourism industry around the lake area. Wen Wu temple was rebuilt again in 1969 to make it greater, bigger and looks more like Chinese palace style
Wen Wu Hiking Trail
Due to their precarious height, the Year-of-Steps are nicknamed the “Stairway to Heaven”. There are 366 ascending steps, each representing one day of the year. The climbing of this entire stairway symbolizes the passing of a year. A date is carved on each of the stone steps, along with the names of internationally famous people who were born on the corresponding date.
CingJing Farm
Passing native forests, through towering gorges, you can immerse yourself in the fresh air and the scenic wild greenery of the Qingjing Veterans Farm. The Qingjing Veterans Farm is situated at the Renai Township of Nantou County,8 km north of Wushe Section, Tai 14A Route of Central Cross-Island Highway in Central Taiwan. It has been opened to public since February 20th, 1961;its altitude is 1,750 meters above the sea. The weather is generally mild all year round.
The Farm produces various kinds of fruits including: peaches, pears, plums, and kiwi fruit.
Facilities in the Farm include: the Tourist Center, the Green Green Grasslands, the Small Swiss Garden, the Recreation Center for visitors, the Shoushan Park, the Guest House and a Stock Nurturing Center.
The journey from Sun Moon Lake to Hualien requires a stop-over. Will put up a night at The Cotswold Villa. From The Cotswold Villa we can venture to Hehuashan.
Hehuanshan 合歡山
Hehuanshan is a 3,416 metres high mountain in Central Taiwan. The peak lies on the boundaries of Nantou and Hualien counties and is within the Taroko Gorge National Park.
Snow, rare in the rest of Taiwan, is relatively common on the mountain during winter months. The Hehuanshan Road leads most of the way up the mountain to Wuling, a saddle between the Main Peak and the East Peak of Hehuanshan. Wuling is the highest point on the island of Taiwan accessible by public roads.
There was at one point a ski lift on the mountain, but later, due to the inconsistency of snowfall, the lift was removed. Remains of the ski lift mechanism are still visible to hikers on the east peak trail.
From the Hehuanshan Road, a trail about one kilometer long leads to the summit of the main peak. At the summit, there is a weather station.
Hehuanshan is part of the Central Mountain Range (中央山脈) that makes up the backbone of Taiwan.
